Marketing: Back to Basics

Years ago, I moved from government to an engineering firm where my charge was leading the development of a new service line. We - technical, marketing, and support personnel - succeeded. In the  process, I advanced from being a marketing “greenhorn” to getting “pretty good at it” and subsequently applied the marketing basics that I had learned to a university position and then in my current sole proprietor consulting business.

On reflection, my view is that the essence – the basics -- of successful marketing of professional services can be captured by these five quotes:

  • “Marketing is not a department, it’s your business.” (Harry Beckwith, consultant)
  • “I don’t care how much you know until I know how much you care.” (anonymous)
  • “My greatest strength as a consultant is to be ignorant and ask a few questions.” (Peter Drucker,  consultant and author)
  • “I’m not upset that you lied to me; I’m upset that from now on I can’t believe you.” (Friedrich Nietzsche, German philosopher)
  • “I will remove from my vocabulary… quit, cannot, unable, impossible, out of the question, improbable, failure, unworkable, hopeless, and retreat…I will persist until I succeed.” (Og Mandino, author of The Greatest Salesman in the World)

Drawing on my marketing experience and research, I have spoken, via webinars and in face-to-face settings about various topics with the following two being very well-received:

  • “Marketing 101: Sleazy Activity or Mutually-Beneficial Process?”
  • “The 5 Habits of Highly-Effective Marketers”

Might you want to explore offering one or both of these topics to your personnel? For example, how about a tailored hands-on, half-day workshop at one of your offices or a two-part webinar delivered to all of your offices?
